Nervous About Joining a Gym? Good. That Means You’re Normal.

Here’s something most gyms won’t tell you: 50% of people who’ve never been to a gym find the idea scary. Not mildly uncomfortable. Scary. And 65% of beginners say they feel intimidated when starting a new fitness routine.

That nervousness you’re feeling right now? It’s the most common thing in the world. You’re not the only person who’s ever Googled “what to expect at a gym” or worried about looking foolish on a machine you’ve never seen before. Almost everyone who walks through our door for the first time feels exactly the same way.

The difference at The Next Step Fitness Centre in North Bay is that we built our entire new member experience around that feeling. Not to ignore it — to actually solve it. You don’t get a keycard and a wave toward the equipment. You get a real person, a real plan, and a real week to see if this is right for you.

Interested in Personal Training? Here’s How We Match You with the Right Trainer.

Personal training at The Next Step isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is the sign-up process. We take the time to match you with a trainer who fits your personality, your goals, and your schedule. Here’s how:

Step 1: Schedule a Free Consultation

Same as above — call 705-475-0724, email thenextstepgym@gmail.com, or use the contact form. When you reach out, we’ll gather some initial information about what you’re looking for so we can pair you with the right trainer from the start.

Step 2: Your 30-Minute Consultation

You’ll sit down with the trainer we’ve matched you with for a 30-minute conversation. This is about getting to know each other. Your trainer will ask about your goals, your history with exercise, any injuries or limitations, your schedule, and what motivates you. You’ll ask whatever questions you have. The goal is to make sure the fit is right — because the relationship between you and your trainer matters more than any program.

Step 3: Your 45-Minute Session

Right after the consultation, you’ll do a 45-minute training session together. This gives your trainer a real-time understanding of your current physical abilities — your strength, your mobility, your movement patterns, where you’re starting from. It also gives you a chance to experience what training with this person actually feels like.

Step 4: Budget-Friendly Options

After your session, we’ll walk through the personal training packages and payment options. We know budget matters, especially when you’re just starting. That’s why we offer flexible, budget-friendly payment plans designed to make personal training accessible — not just for people with unlimited disposable income. No surprise fees. No hidden costs.
Total time for your first PT visit: approximately 75 minutes. 30 minutes talking + 45 minutes moving. You leave knowing your trainer, knowing your starting point, and knowing exactly what comes next.

Why People Who Are Nervous About Gyms End Up Loving This One

Most gyms in North Bay hand you a keycard and hope you figure it out. That’s fine if you already know what you’re doing. But if you’re new to fitness — or coming back after years away — that approach doesn’t work. 50% of new gym members quit within 90 days, and the number one reason is they feel lost and disconnected. The Next Step was built to be the opposite of that. Here’s what makes the difference:

Why Amanda Built The Next Step This Way

Amanda Hampel has owned and operated The Next Step Fitness Centre since 2001. She holds a Sports Conditioning Diploma and a Fitness & Health Promotion Diploma from Canadore College, and she’s a Certified Exercise Physiologist (C-SEP) and CanFitPro certified personal trainer.

Over 25 years in North Bay, Amanda has watched people walk through the door terrified. She’s seen the person who sat in the parking lot for 10 minutes before coming in. The one who apologized for being out of shape. The one who hadn’t exercised since high school and didn’t know where to start.

“The first visit is the hardest one. I know that. That’s why we spend a full hour with every new member — not 10 minutes, not a quick tour. A real hour. By the time you leave, you know the gym, you know your trainer, and you know what to do. After that, the second visit is easy.”

— Amanda Hampel, Owner & Certified Exercise Physiologist (C-SEP), CanFitPro Certified

That philosophy drives everything about The Next Step’s new member experience. The free consultation, the trainer session, the free week — it all exists because Amanda believes nobody should feel lost at their own gym.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

You don’t need to overthink this. Here’s the checklist:

Comfortable clothing — loose-fitting or stretchy. Something you can move in. Nothing fancy.Clean running or training shoes — indoor shoes that support your feet. Leave the flip-flops at home.A water bottle or sports drink — we have water available, but bring your own if you prefer.A positive attitude and a smile — seriously. That’s all we ask. The rest, we’ll figure out together.

That’s it. You don’t need special equipment, a pre-made workout plan, or any prior experience. Just show up as you are. Our trainers handle everything else.
