Not the Biggest Gym in North Bay. The One That Actually Works.

We’re not trying to be the biggest gym in town. We don’t have a pool, a juice bar, or a rock-climbing wall. What we have is every piece of equipment you actually need to get stronger, move better, and stay healthy — in a facility that’s clean, accessible, and open whenever you want to use it.

The Next Step Fitness Centre at 1370 Regina St in North Bay’s west end is built for people who want to train — not people who want to tour a resort. The equipment is maintained. The change rooms are clean. The class room is a real room, not a roped-off corner. And when you walk in at 6 AM or 10 PM, the place works exactly the same way.

Here’s everything inside.

Open 24/7 — Train Whenever Your Life Allows

Every member receives a personal keycard that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Early morning before work. Lunch hour. Late at night after the kids are in bed. Weekends, holidays, whenever.

Your keycard is activated once your membership is set up. You don’t need to wait for staffed hours to train. You don’t need to adjust your schedule around someone else’s business hours. The gym is here when you need it.

Staff and trainers are available during regular business hours. Outside those hours, you have full access to all equipment, the gym floor, change rooms, and amenities.

This matters more than most people think. The number one reason people skip workouts is scheduling — they can’t make it work within a gym’s hours. At The Next Step, that excuse doesn’t exist.

Gym Equipment — Built for Every Type of Training

We stock equipment for strength training, cardiovascular fitness, mobility work, and athletic performance. Whether you’re following a trainer’s program, running your own routine, or trying something new, the equipment is here. Here’s what’s on the floor:

Full-Body Circuit Machines

Selectorized circuit machines that target every major muscle group. Pin-select weight stacks make it easy to adjust resistance in seconds — no loading and unloading plates between sets. Circuit machines are ideal for beginners learning proper movement patterns, members working through rehabilitation programs, and anyone who wants an efficient full-body session. Our machines guide you through safe, controlled ranges of motion.

Free Weights

Dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells. Free weights recruit more stabilizer muscles than machines, build functional strength, and allow for a wider variety of exercises. Whether you’re doing dumbbell presses, kettlebell swings, barbell squats, or farmer carries, the weights are here and organized.

Squat Racks

Dedicated squat racks for barbell squats, overhead presses, rack pulls, and other compound lifts. Squat racks are the centrepiece of any strength program — and they’re one of the most requested pieces of equipment that budget gyms either don’t have or don’t have enough of.

Cardio Equipment

Treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and other cardiovascular machines. Cardio equipment is the most-used category in any gym — and ours is maintained, not worn out. Whether you’re warming up before a strength session, building endurance, or doing dedicated cardio work, the equipment is ready.

Mobility and Flexibility Tools

Foam rollers, stretching mats, resistance bands, and mobility-specific tools. Flexibility and mobility work isn’t optional — it’s what keeps your joints healthy, your movement quality high, and your injury risk low. These tools are available on the gym floor, not hidden in a closet.

Plyometric and Agility Equipment

Plyo boxes, agility ladders, cones, and other athletic training tools. Plyometric and agility work builds power, speed, coordination, and reaction time. These tools are popular with athletes, but they’re just as valuable for anyone who wants to move faster, land safer, and feel more athletic in everyday life.
Every piece of equipment is available 24/7 to all members. If you’re not sure how to use something, our trainers will show you — that’s what your free consultation session is for.

A Gym That’s Actually Built for Everyone

Research shows that 81% of individuals with a disability don’t feel welcome in fitness spaces. That’s not a statistic we’re willing to accept. The Next Step Fitness Centre is built to be accessible and inclusive — not as a marketing claim, but as a design decision.

Clean Facilities. Real Amenities. Not an Afterthought.

The change rooms at The Next Step aren’t a row of lockers and a bench. They’re a proper space designed for adults who are coming from work, heading to work, or fitting a workout into a real schedule. Here’s what’s included:

Showers

clean, maintained, and available for every member, every visit

Lockers

secure storage for your belongings while you train

Vanity area

mirror, counter space, and a place to get yourself together after your workout

Get-ready station

because many of our members come before work or during their lunch hour and need to look presentable afterward

Changing area

private space to change, not just an open room

Coat rack

especially appreciated during North Bay’s winter months when you’re walking in with layers

Toilets

clean, properly maintained, and not shared with a commercial plaza
These details matter. A gym where the change rooms are an afterthought tells you what the owner prioritizes. At The Next Step, the experience doesn’t end when your last set does.

A Dedicated Class Room — Not a Corner of the Gym Floor

A dedicated class room matters because it gives instructors full control of the space — music, layout, energy — without competing with the rest of the gym. It also means members training on the gym floor aren’t disrupted when a class is running.

Scheduled group fitness classes — led by certified instructors across a range of styles and intensity levelsSmall group training sessions — more personal than a class, more affordable than one-on-onePrivate activities and events — from corporate wellness sessions to community programsRoom rentals — available for trainers, instructors, or organizations looking for a professional fitness space in North Bay

Built by Amanda — Not a Franchise Blueprint

Amanda Hampel has been part of the team at The Next Step Fitness Centre since 2010 and transitioned to owner and operator in 2020. She holds a Sports Conditioning Diploma from Canadore College and is a CanFitPro certified personal trainer with over 15 years of experience.
Every piece of equipment in this gym was carefully chosen. Not by a corporate purchasing department. Not by a franchise manual, but because thousands of people have trained here over 25 years and she knows what actually gets used — and what sits in the corner collecting dust.

“You don’t need 200 machines. You need the right 50. I’d rather have equipment that’s maintained, that works for every fitness level, and that our trainers know inside and out. That’s more valuable than a gym floor that looks impressive in photos but doesn’t serve the person standing in front of it.”

— Amanda Hampel, Owner

That same philosophy extends to the change rooms, the accessibility features, the class room, and the 24/7 access. Every decision was made by someone who actually trains people every day — not by someone managing a spreadsheet in a head office.
